During our trip to Greece in summer, we spent three days on the island of Ios, and I can highly recommend it. Although Ios is known as a party island and is often referred to as the little sister of Mykonos, it definitely has so much more to offer than just parties or the island of Mykonos in general. Personally, it reminded me more of Santorini, but with muuuch better and more beautiful beaches. But I’ll be happy to show you everything in detail 🙂
The best way to get to Ios is by ferry from other islands. There are daily ferries to various nearby islands and to Athens. Travel time and price vary depending on the distance, but it’s best to check Ferryhopper for the best connections.
We spent five days on Naxos before that, so we traveled directly from Naxos to Ios and then back to the airport in Mykonos. The closest airports are Santorini and Mykonos (for us from Vienna).
Im Zuge unserer Griechenland Reise im Sommer haben wir 3 Tage auf der Insel Ios eingeplant und ich kann euch diese nur wärmstens empfehlen. Ios ist zwar bekannt als Partyinsel oder wird auch gerne als die kleine Schwester von Mykonos bezeichnet, hat aber definitiv so viel mehr zu bieten als nur Partys oder Mykonos generell. Mich persönlich hat sie eher an Santorin erinnert, mit viiiiiil besseren und schöneren Stränden allerdings. Aber ich zeige euch gerne alles im Detail 🙂
Die beste Art um nach Ios zu kommen, ist mit der Fähre von anderen Inseln anzureisen. Es gibt tägliche Fähren auf die verschiedensten Inseln in der Nähe oder auch nach Athen, je nach Entfernung variiert natürlich Fahrzeit und Preis, aber checkt dafür am besten auf Ferryhopper die besten Verbindungen.
Wir haben davor 5 Tage auf Naxos verbracht, und sind daher von Naxos direkt nach Ios gefahren, und zurück dann zum Flughafen nach Mykonos. Die nähesten Flughäfen sind Santorin und Mykonos (für uns aus Wien).
Hotel
We spent three nights at the Yialos Ios Hotel and absolutely loved it! It’s the perfect location — just a five-minute walk to the ferry port, a five-minute walk to the beach and restaurants, and about a 15-minute walk (uphill, though) to the capital, Chora. However, I would recommend renting a scooter or ATV so you can explore the island on your own and enjoy the incredible views. If you don’t want to do that, there are regular buses from the hotel to the capital Chora and various beaches, which only cost €2 per trip.
This family-run hotel boasts a beautiful boho-style property and a huge pool, which is the heart of the complex. The family is incredibly friendly and helpful, and you immediately feel at home here. The pool bar, where breakfast is also served, is the perfect place to relax and enjoy yourself. Our room was very small, but also very beautiful and in the typical Cycladic style. There are also some rooms with private pools and sea views.

Wir haben 3 Nächte im Yialos Ios Hotel verbracht und dieses Hotel absolut geliebt! Es hat die perfekte Lage – nur 5 Gehminuten zum Fährhafen, nur 5 Gehminuten zum Strand und Restaurants, und in etwa 15 Gehminuten (allerdings bergauf) in die Hauptstadt Chora. Ich würde euch aber sowieso ans Herz legen, einen Scooter oder ein Quad auszuborgen, um die Insel auf eigene Faust erkunden zu können und um die unglaublichen Ausblicke genießen zu können. Wer das allerdings nicht möchte, vom Hotel nur 2 Gehminuten entfernt, fahren regelmäßig Busse in die Hauptstadt Chora und zu verschiedenen Stränden, für die man auch nur 2€ pro Fahrt zahlt.
Das familiengeführte Hotel überzeugt mit einem wunderschönen Anwesen im Boho-Stil und einem riesigen Pool, der das Herz der Anlage darstellt. Die Familie ist unglaublich nett und hilfsbereit, man fühlt sich hier einfach gleich wohl. Die Poolbar, an der auch das Frühstück serviert wird, lädt richtig zum Genießen und Entspannen ein. Unser Zimmer war zwar sehr klein, aber ebenfalls sehr schön und im typischen kykladischen Stil. Es gibt auch einige Zimmer mit privatem Pool und Meerblick.

Chora
Chora is capital city of the island and is located high up the hill with a beautiful view of the harbor and the surrounding islands. On a clear day, we could see Paros, Antiparos, Sikinos, and Santorini. The town is reminiscent of Mykonos or Santorini, with its narrow streets, whitewashed houses, churches with blue domes, and the typical Cycladic style. There are countless bars and clubs that attract mainly young people in the evenings. But if you walk through the town in the morning or around lunchtime, you will have it almost entirely to yourself. My special tips for Chora:
Chora ist die Hauptstadt der Insel und liegt hoch oben mit einem wunderschönen Blick auf den Hafen und die umliegenden Inseln. Wir konnten bei klarer Sicht Paros, Antiparos, Sikinos und Santorin erkennen. Die Stadt erinnert an Mykonos oder Santorin, mit ihren engen Gassen, weißen Häusern, Kirchen mit blauen Kuppeln und dem typischen kykladischen Stil. Es gibt unzählige Bars und Clubs, die abends vor allem junge Menschen anziehen. Spaziert man aber vormittags oder um die Mittagszeit durch die Stadt, hat man diese fast ganz für sich alleine. Meine besonderen Tipps für Chora:

The rooftop tapas bar “The Supper Club” hosts a movie night several times a week, showing Mamma Mia. Pure Greek feeling 🙂

Sunset over Ios
If you climb up the way to the highest church in the city, the Church of Panagia Gremniotissa, at sunset, you will be rewarded with an incredible view of the island and the sunset. It’s truly magical, and – it’s free. Unfortunately, it’s no longer really a secret tip, but despite the crowds of people who enjoy the sunset there, it’s still highly recommended. And somehow it’s also nice to see so many people celebrating this spectacle in the same way. 🙂
Wenn man zum Sonnenuntergang bis zur höchsten Kirche der Stadt hinaufgeht, der „Church of Panagia Gremniotissa“ erwartet einen ein unglaublicher Ausblick über die Insel und auf den Sonnenuntergang. Wirklich absolut magisch und noch dazu gratis. Leider ist es nicht mehr wirklich ein Geheimtipp, aber trotz der vielen Menschen, die den Sonnenuntergang dort genießen, absolut empfehlenswert. Und irgendwie ja auch schön mit anzusehen, dass so viele Menschen dieses Spektakel genauso feiern. 🙂
Beaches
Paralia Mylopotas
One of the most beautiful and largest beaches on the island is Mylopotas Beach. It is only about 10 minutes (by car) from Chora and offers everything you need for a day at the beach. There are many restaurants and shops around the beach, as well as water sports activities, sun beds, beach clubs, and a public beach. This beach is also home to Farout Beach Club, the largest club on the island, where well-known DJs regularly perform. If you walk a little further along the beach, there are also some rocks and cliffs where you can be alone or go cliff jumping.
Einer der schönsten und größten Strände der Insel ist der Mylopotas Beach. Er ist nur etwa 10 Minuten (mit dem Auto) von Chora entfernt und bietet alles, was man für einen Strandtag braucht. Es gibt viele Restaurants und Shops um den Strand, sowie Wassersportaktivitäten, Sonnenliegen und Beach Clubs, als auch einen öffentlichen Strand. An diesem Strand ist auch der Farout Beach Club, der größte Club der Insel, wo auch regelmäßig bekannte DJs auflegen. Wenn man den Strand entlang ein bisschen weiter geht, gibt es auch einige Steine und Klippen, wo man alleine sein oder Klippenspringen kann.
Paralia Gialos
Another beautiful beach located in a bay. Not far from the harbor and our hotel. There are several restaurants, bars, and shops on this beach, and they are especially inviting in the evening or at sunset because everything is beautifully lit.
Ebenfalls ein schöner Strand in einer Bucht gelegen. Nicht weit vom Hafen und von unserem Hotel entfernt. Es gibt einige Restaurants, Bars und Shops an diesem Strand, und vor allem am Abend oder zum Sonnenuntergang sind diese sehr einladend, weil alles schön beleuchtet ist.
Tzamaria Beach
A beach we discovered by chance while driving past. It is very small, but has beautiful crystal-clear water. Here you have the best chance of having it all to yourself. When we were there in August, there was no one else there!
Ein Strand, den wir durch Zufall im Vorbeifahren entdeckt haben. Er ist sehr klein, aber hat wunderschönes glasklares Wasser zu bieten. Hier hat man die höchste Chance, ihn für sich alleine zu haben. Denn als wir im August dort waren, waren keine Menschen dort!
Paralia Koumpara
A beautiful beach, also located in a bay. We spent the day at Erego Beach Club behind it. I can highly recommend the beach club, which has comfortable beds, good music, and a beautiful pool – it’s a great place to spend the day 🙂 The sunset is also supposed to be beautiful from there.
Not far from this beach club and beach, there is also the Pathos Club & Restaurant, which is highly recommended, especially at sunset or for parties.
Ein wunderschöner Strand, ebenfalls in einer Bucht gelegen. Wir haben den Tag im dahinter gelegenen Erego Beach Club verbracht. Den Beach Club kann ich euch auch nur empfehlen, es gibt bequeme Betten, gute Musik und einen schönen Pool, hier lässt es sich gut einen Tag lang aushalten 🙂 Auch der Sonnenuntergang soll wunderschön von dort sein.
Nicht weit von diesem Beach Club und Strand entfernt, gibt es auch noch den Pathos Club & Restaurant, vor allem zu Sonnenuntergang oder Partys absolut empfehlenswert.
Magganari Beach
Magganari Beach is located about 40 minutes by car from Chora, in the south of the island. It is said to be the most beautiful beach on the island. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to visit it, but it’s on my list for next time. 🙂 There is also a daily bus that leaves Chora for this beach at 12:30 p.m. and returns at 5:30 p.m.
Etwa 40 Minuten mit dem Auto von Chora entfernt, im Süden der Insel, liegt der Magganari Strand. Er soll der schönste der Insel sein. Wir haben es leider nicht geschafft ihn zu besuchen, aber er steht auf meiner Liste fürs nächste Mal. 🙂 Es gibt auch täglich einen Bus um 12:30 Uhr der von Chora zu diesem Strand fährt und um 17:30 Uhr wieder zurück.
Tripiti Beach
There are also several beaches, including Tripiti Beach, that can only be reached by boat. Such a trip is definitely worthwhile, as the water on the island is so beautiful and the hidden coves are sure to surpass the other beaches. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to do that either, but it’s on the list 🙂
Es gibt auch noch einige Strände, unter anderem der Tripiti Strand, die nur mit dem Boot erreichbar sind. So ein Ausflug lohnt sich bestimmt auch, da das Wasser auf der Insel sooo wunderschön ist und versteckte Buchten die anderen Strände bestimmt nochmal toppen können. Auch das haben wir leider nicht geschafft, aber auf der Liste 🙂
Sunset Spots
The sunsets on Ios are truly magical! I even think they are comparable to those in Santorini. In addition to the spot near the church in Chora, there are two others that I would like to recommend to you.
Die Sonnenuntergänge von Ios sind wirklich absolut magisch! Ich finde sogar sie sind mit denen auf Santorin zu vergleichen. Neben dem Spot bei der Kirche in Chora, gibt es noch zwei andere, die ich euch empfehlen möchte.
Alma Sunset Bar & Suites
One of them is the Alma Sunset Bar – it is also located in Chora, but a little outside the center. It is a slightly more expensive bar, by Ios standards, but for me personally, it is worth every cent. Spread over several levels, it offers an incredibly beautiful view of the island and the sunset. There is also an infinity pool that you can use from 6 p.m. onwards.
Einer davon ist die Alma Sunset Bar – sie liegt auch in Chora, allerdings ein wenig außerhalb des Zentrums. Es ist eine etwas teurere Bar, für Ios Verhältnisse, aber für mich persönlich jeden Cent wert. Auf mehreren Ebenen verteilt hat man einen unfassbar schönen Blick über die Insel und auf den Sonnenuntergang. Es gibt auch einen Infinitypool, den man mit benutzen kann ab 18:00 Uhr.
Ios Club & Sunset Dining Bar
This bar is right next to the Alma Sunset Bar and has a similar vibe and view, but without a pool, but with food instead 🙂 Definitely worth a visit in my opinion, but you should reserve a table in advance as it gets very busy. Weddings are often celebrated here, so it’s best to check in advance 🙂
Diese Bar ist gleich in der Nähe von der Alma Sunset Bar und hat einen ähnlichen Vibe und Blick, allerdings ohne Pool, aber dafür mit Essen 🙂 Lohnt sich definitiv auch meiner Meinung nach, allerdings sollte man hier vorab einen Tisch reservieren, da sie sehr voll wird. Oft werden hier auch Hochzeiten gefeiert, also besser vorher abchecken 🙂
