The Greek island of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea is known for its parties and luxury. I will show you how you can spend a wonderful vacation there even with a smaller budget.
Die griechische Insel der Kykladen im Ägäischen Meer ist vor allem für ihre Partys und ihren Luxus bekannt. Ich zeige euch, wie ihr einen wunderschönen Urlaub auch mit einem kleineren Budget dort verbringen könnt.
the best season to go there
We spent there 5 days in late September, early October 2022. At this time it is still hot and perfect for swimming. In general, it is already a little quieter on the island than during summer. The parties and concerts are already over at this time, the masses of tourists are also almost gone, which is just perfect for a relaxing vacation.
Wir waren Ende September, Anfang Oktober 2022 für 5 Tage auf der Insel. Zu dieser Zeit ist es immer noch sehr warm und perfekt zum Baden. Generell ist es auf der Insel schon etwas ruhiger als im Hochsommer. Die Partys und Konzerte sind um diese Zeit schon vorbei, die Massen an Touristen sind auch fast weg, das ist für einen entspannenden Urlaub geradezu perfekt.
Hotel
We spent 4 nights at this amazing hotel, which is located nearby Mykonos-town. It’s in a small bay and within walking distance to some restaurants & supermarkets. The rooms are all decorated in the typical cycladic style with boho elements. The highlight of the hotel is definitely the pool and pool bar. We spent several hours there every day. Another plus if you travel at this time of year: there are enough sunbeds at the pool to choose from! If the hotel is fully booked, it might be a little tight.
Also the very tasty breakfast takes place at the pool bar. The view is just incredibly beautiful! Click here to find more information about the hotel.
Wir haben 4 Nächte in diesem wunderschönen Hotel gleich in der Nähe von Mykonos-Stadt verbracht. Das Hotel liegt in einer kleinen Bucht und in Fußnähe zu einigen Restaurants & Supermärkten. Die Zimmer sind alle im kykladischen Stil mit Boho-Elementen eingerichtet, richtig zum Wohlfühlen. Das Highlight des Hotels ist aber auf jeden Fall der Pool und die Pool Bar. Wir haben jeden Tag mehrere Stunden dort verbracht. Ein weiterer Pluspunkt wenn man um diese Jahreszeit reist: es gibt genug Liegen am Pool zur Auswahl! Wenn das Hotel ausgebucht ist, kann es da schon mal eng werden.
Auch das sehr leckere Frühstück findet bei der Pool Bar statt. Der Ausblick ist wirklich unglaublich schön! Hier kommt ihr zur Booking.com Seite von dem Hotel.
Transport
We booked a rental car and drove with to all the places we visited. In Mykonos town there are several public parking lots where you can park for free and walk only a few meters into town. There was also free parking at the beaches we went to. However, how this is regulated in the high season, I do not know. It is definitely worth being mobile and exploring the island. There are also cheap buses, but I don’t know anything about the connections.
Wir haben ein Mietauto gebucht und sind mit diesem auch zu allen Orten, die wir besucht haben, gefahren. In Mykonos Stadt gibt es mehrere öffentliche Parkplätze, wo man gratis parken kann und nur wenige Meter in die Stadt geht. Auch an den Stränden, an denen wir waren, gab es gratis Parkplätze. Wie das allerdings in der Hochsaison geregelt ist, weiß ich nicht. Es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall mobil zu sein und die Insel zu erkunden. Es gibt auch günstige Busse, allerdings kann ich da nichts über die Verbindungen sagen.
The best spots
Little Venice
Little Venice is a small area right on the harbor in Mykonos Town with many restaurants and bars. I personally liked this area the best. However, it is also very expensive, for a non-alcoholic cocktail and an Aperol Spritz we paid whopping 38€, and to be honest they were not even good. But the view is simply unbeatable.
Little Venice ist ein kleiner Stadtteil direkt am Hafen in Mykonos-Stadt mit vielen Restaurants und Bars. Mir persönlich hat diese Gegend am besten gefallen. Sie ist allerdings auch sehr teuer, für einen alkoholfreien Cocktail und einen Aperol Spritz haben wir dort satte 38€ bezahlt, und so gut waren sie ehrlich gesagt auch nicht. Dafür ist die Aussicht aber auch einfach unschlagbar.
Kato Mili Windmills
The windmills are located just above Little Venice. From here you have a great view of the colorful houses and the sea. The sunset is also incredibly beautiful from here.
Die Windmühlen befinden sich gleich oberhalb von Little Venice. Von hier aus hat man einen super Blick auf die bunten Häuser und das Meer. Auch der Sonnenuntergang ist von hier unglaublich schön.
180° Sunset Bar
The bar above the city is of course a must for many and I absolutely get why. The view from up there, especially at sunset, is simply unique. However, it is also very expensive here and there is self-service. For a table in the front row, you have to reserve and make a minimum consumption of 100€. The parking lot costs 5€.
Die Bar über der Stadt ist natürlich bei vielen ein Muss und ich kann absolut nachvollziehen warum. Der Blick von dort oben, vor allem zum Sonnenuntergang, ist wirklich einmalig. Allerdings ist es auch hier sehr teuer und es herrscht Selbstbedienung. Für einen Tisch in der ersten Reihe muss man reservieren und einen Mindestkonsum von 100€ leisten. Der Parkplatz kostet 5€.
Our hotel rather advised us against this bar, because it’s very touristy and crowded, they recommended another equally beautiful bar, but it was unfortunately already closed in October. This would be ‘The Garden Mykonos’.
Unsere Unterkunft hat uns von dieser Bar eher abgeraten, da sie sehr touristisch und überlaufen ist, und uns eine andere genauso schöne empfohlen, die im Oktober aber leider schon geschlossen war. Diese wäre ‘The Garden Mykonos’.
Bonis Windmill
A really beautiful spot to watch the sunset is Bonis Windmill. You can walk there from the city and sit on one of the walls around the windmill and watch the sun set over the city and disappear behind the horizon.
Ein wirklich wunderschöner Spot um den Sonnenuntergang zu betrachten ist Bonis Windmill. Von der Stadt kann man gemütlich zu Fuß hingehen und sich auf eine der Mauern rund um die Windmühle setzen und zusehen wie die Sonne über der Stadt untergeht und hinter dem Horizont verschwindet.
Mykonos Town
For the city I just recommend to stroll around without a plan. The town is not big and you discover anyway everything you want to see. But to walk through the winding streets and just let the vibe work on you, has been the most beautiful for me.
Für die Stadt gebe ich euch nur den Tipp einfach ohne Plan herumzuschlendern. Die Stadt ist wirklich nicht groß und man entdeckt sowieso all das, was man sehen wollte. Aber durch die verwinkelten Gassen zu spazieren und den Flair einfach auf sich wirken zu lassen, ist für mich das schönste gewesen.
Definitely I can recommend a walk here at the harbor, the water is sooo beautiful blue, the white houses around and the many small fishing boats are really gorgeous.
Definitiv kann ich euch aber einen Spaziergang hier am Hafen empfehlen, das Wasser ist soo schön blau, die weißen Häuser rundherum und die vielen kleinen Fischerboote sind wirklich traumhaft.
Restaurants in Mykonos Town
Niko’s Taverna
A typical greek taverna in the middle of the town with great greek food & a lot of tables.
Eine typische griechische Taverne mitten in der Stadt mit vielen Sitzmöglichkeiten und gutem griechischen Essen.
Pasta Fresca Barkia
If you love pasta as much as I do, then this restaurant is the right one for you. Here you’ll get amazing self-made pasta in a sweet and tiny restaurant in the middle of the town. And it’s also very cheap!
Falls ihr Pasta so sehr liebt wie ich, dann ist dieses Restaurant genau das richtige für euch. Selbstgemachte Pasta in einem süßen, kleinen Restaurant mitten in der Stadt. Und sehr günstig!
Ornos Beach
To be honest we haven’t been at many beaches in these 5 days, because I have been sick, but the island has a lot of amazing beaches to offer! A really beautiful beach, that even our hotel recommended and wasn’t far away from it, was Ornos beach. We paid 30€ for 2 daybeds and a parasol here, which was a great offer compared to other beaches. There are only a few public beaches in Mykonos, most of them belong to beach clubs and are therefore very expensive.
Zugegeben, wir waren leider nicht viel auf Stränden in diesen 5 Tagen, da ich leider ein wenig erkältet war, aber die Insel hat wirklich viele wunderschöne Strände zu bieten! Ein wirklich schöner Strand, den uns auch unsere Unterkunft empfohlen hat und der davon auch nicht weit entfernt war, war Ornos Beach. Zwei Liegen mit Sonnenschirm kosten hier 30€, was eine gute alternative zu anderen Stränden ist. Denn es gibt nur wenig öffentliche Strände, die meisten gehören zu Beachclubs und sind somit sehr teuer.
Viewpoint
On our last evening we enjoyed the sunset again with a view over the city. The view from there is amazing! You can find the place if you search for the accommodation ‘Stelios View Mykonos Town’ in the iPhone Maps app. Right next to it is this place with the wall.
Am letzten Abend haben wir den Sonnenuntergang nochmal mit Blick auf die Stadt genossen. Der Ausblick von dort ist wirklich ein Traum. Ihr könnt den Ort finden wenn ihr in der iPhone Karten App die Unterkunft ‘Stelios View Mykonos Town’ eingebt. Gleich daneben ist dieser Platz mit der Mauer.
Costs
We paid for a direct flight from Vienna to Mykonos with Ryanair 108€ per person (without luggage).
For 4 nights at Dreambox Mykonos Suites we paid 580€ for 2, which makes 290€ per person.
For the rental car we paid 110€ in total for 5 days. We didn’t have to refuel, because the island is very small and we used almost no tank.
So in total that’s 453€ per person – not that much for 5 days on the expensive island of Mykonos, right? 🙂

Das ist also ein Gesamtpreis von 453€ pro Person – gar nicht so viel für 5 Tage auf der teuren Insel Mykonos oder? 🙂
