The Cinque Terre are the 5 coastal villages of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza & Monterosso al Mare on the Italian Riviera. They are known for their colorful houses and terraced vineyards on the steep slopes. There is a hiking trail called ‘Sentiero Azzurro’ that connects the villages and offers beautiful panoramic views over the coast.
We spent a long weekend there at the end of March and really enjoyed it.
Die Cinque Terre sind die 5 Küstendörfer Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza & Monterosso al Mare an der italienischen Riviera. Sie sind bekannt für ihre bunten Häuser und den terrassenförmig an den Steilhängen angelegten Weinbergen. Es gibt den Wanderweg ‘Sentiero Azzurro’, der die Dörfer miteinander verbindet und wunderschöne Panoramaausblicke über die Küste bietet.
Wir haben Ende März ein verlängertes Wochenende dort verbracht und es richtig genossen.
How to get there
There are several airports nearby, for example Genoa, Pisa or Bologna. From bigger Italian cities like Milan, Rome, Florence or Turin you can also take the train to visit the Cinque Terre.
We chose a Friday evening flight from Vienna to Pisa and then spent a night in Pisa. The airport in Pisa is located right in the city and you can walk to the city center.
Es gibt mehrere Flughäfen in der Nähe, zum Beispiel Genua, Pisa oder Bologna. Von größeren italienischen Städten wie Mailand, Rom, Florenz oder Turin kann man auch mit dem Zug fahren, um die Cinque Terre zu besuchen.
Wir haben uns für einen Flug am Freitagabend von Wien nach Pisa entschieden und dann eine Nacht in Pisa verbracht. Der Flughafen in Pisa ist direkt in der Stadt und man kann zu Fuß ins Stadtzentrum spazieren.
Pisa
In Pisa we stayed at a small Bed & Breakfast, which was a 5 minute walk to the Leaning Tower and therefore perfect for spending half a day in the city. Especially the owners were very very nice. Opposite the B&B they have a small cafe where you can have typical Italian breakfast, with coffee and croissant. Click here to see more of the B&B. 🙂
There are also many restaurants nearby to go for lunch or dinner and try delicious Italian food. The hosts recommended us the restaurant ‘Al Bagno di Nerone’. The pizza there was really very good!
Unsere Unterkunft in Pisa, ein kleines Bed & Breakfast, war 5 Gehminuten vom Schiefen Turm entfernt und für einen halben Tag in der Stadt daher perfekt. Vor allem die Eigentümer sind sehr sehr nett. Gegenüber des B&B haben sie ein kleines Café wo man typisch italienisch, mit Kaffee und Croissant, frühstücken kann. Hier gehts zur Unterkunft: hier
Es gibt auch viele Restaurants in der Nähe um mittags oder abends lecker italienisch essen zu gehen. Die Vermieter haben uns das Restaurant ‘Al Bagno di Nerone’ empfohlen. Die Pizza dort war wirklich sehr gut!
On Saturday we went to see the Leaning Tower in the morning. We were there at about 08:00, which was very pleasant because there were not many tourists yet.
We spent about 2 hours at the Leaning Tower and then walked to the train station of Pisa. Pisa is a really small city in which you can reach everything well by foot.
Am Samstag haben wir uns morgens den Schiefen Turm angesehen. Wir waren um etwa 08:00 Uhr dort, was sehr angenehm war da noch nicht viele Touristen unterwegs waren.
Wir haben etwa 2 Stunden beim Schiefen Turm verbracht und sind dann zum Bahnhof von Pisa spaziert. Pisa ist wirklich eine kleine Stadt in der man alles gut fußläufig erreichen kann.
La Spezia
We took the train for 8€ from Pisa to the town La Spezia. Since there are not many accommodations in the 5 villages, we chose to stay there and booked again a B&B. The simple but fine B&B is about 15 minutes walk from the train station and close to many restaurants, bars and stores. Wir sind mit dem Zug von Pisa um 8€ nach La Spezia gefahren. Da es in den 5 Dörfern nicht sehr viele Unterkünfte gibt, haben wir uns für eine Unterkunft, wieder ein B&B in La Spezia entschieden. Die einfache aber feine Unterkunft ist etwa 15 Minuten zu Fuß vom Bahnhof entfernt und in der Nähe von vielen Restaurants, Bars und Shops. Frühstück gibt es in der angrenzenden Fußgängerzone, etwa 5 Gehminuten entfernt, in einem Café. Hier gehts zum Bed & Breakfast: hier

Transport
The best way to visit the Cinque Terre is with the Cinque Terre Card. With this card you can travel as often as you want between the villages and La Spezia by train. The Cinque Terre Card costs 33€ per person for 2 days.
I would not recommend renting a car there! No cars are allowed in the villages and the nearest parking lots are far away.
Der beste Weg um die Cinque Terre zu besuchen ist mit der Cinque Terre Card. Mit dieser kann man beliebig oft zwischen den Dörfern und La Spezia mit dem Zug fahren. Die Cinque Terre Card hat für 2 Tage 33€ pro Person gekostet.
Ein Mietauto würde ich euch dort auf keinen Fall empfehlen! In den Dörfern sind keine Autos erlaubt und die nächsten Parkplätze sind weit entfernt.
Riomaggiore
The first stop coming from La Spezia is Riomaggiore. The train station is right in the village and everything is within easy walking distance. We strolled a bit through the village, had something to eat and drink and went to the sea. From there you have a beautiful view of the colorful facades of the houses.
Der erste Halt von La Spezia kommend ist Riomaggiore. Der Bahnhof ist direkt im Dorf und alles ist gut zu Fuß erreichbar. Wir sind ein bisschen durch das Dorf geschlendert, haben etwas gegessen und getrunken und sind zum Meer gegangen. Von dort hat man einen wunderschönen Blick auf die bunten Fassaden der Häuser.

Tutti Frutti – a must for all fish & seafood lovers!
Bar O’Netto – especially try the delicious bruschetta variations with pesto!
Manarola
We absolutely loved Manarola, that’s why we spent most of the time in this village.
Manarola hat uns am Besten gefallen, daher haben wir hier auch die meiste Zeit verbracht.
Restaurants:
Nessun Dorma
The most famous restaurant in town and absolutely worth a visit! The food is excellent and the view hard to beat. It’s best to book a table online in advance or joining the queue online while you’re still exploring the village, as it’s always busy and otherwise you’ll have no chance of getting a table.
Das angesagteste Restaurant im Ort und absolut einen Besuch wert! Das Essen ist ausgezeichnet und die Aussicht kaum zu überbieten. Reserviert am besten vorab online einen Tisch oder tragt euch während ihr noch im Dorf unterwegs seid online in der Warteschlange ein, da es immer gut besucht ist und ihr sonst keine Chance auf einen freien Tisch habt.
If you don’t get a table or don’t want to go there, you can also just buy something to drink in one of the supermarkets in the village or take something from one of the take-away restaurants and enjoy the sunset on one of the park benches in front of the Nessun Dorma. We did that one evening and it was amazing.
Falls ihr keinen Tisch bekommt oder dort hin wollt, könnt ihr euch auch einfach in einem der Supermärkte im Dorf etwas zu trinken kaufen oder bei einem der Take-Away Restaurants etwas mitnehmen und den Sonnenuntergang auf einer der Parkbänke beim Nessun Dorma genießen. Das haben wir auch an einem Abend gemacht und es ist einfach wunderschön gewesen!
Monterosso al Mare
On the second day we first drove to the last of the 5 villages, Monterosso al Mare. The train station is located a bit outside the village, but close to the sea. But we wanted to see the beach only anyway, so we were not in the village itself. On the beach promenade there are some nice cafes where we enjoyed the view and the sound of the sea. A moment I still remember with pleasure.
Am zweiten Tag sind wir zuerst zum letzten der 5 Dörfer gefahren, Monterosso al Mare. Der Bahnhof liegt hier etwas außerhalb vom Dorf, dafür nahe dem Meer. Von Monterosso wollten wir aber ohnehin nur den Strand sehen, daher waren wir gar nicht im Dorf selbst. An der Strandpromenade gibt es einige nette Cafés, wo wir die Aussicht und das Meeresrauschen genossen haben. Ein Moment, an dem ich mich immer noch gerne zurückerinnere.

La Torre
Since we arrived at lunchtime, we looked for something to eat and discovered the restaurant La Torre on Google Maps. However, the way to the restaurant is a bit exhausting and goes partly steeply uphill with many steps. But it was definitely worth it, because both the food and the view were just perfect.
Da wir um die Mittagszeit angekommen sind, wollten wir gleich mal etwas zu essen suchen und haben auf Google Maps das Restaurant La Torre entdeckt. Der Weg dorthin ist allerdings etwas anstrengend und geht teilweise steil bergauf und über viele Stufen. Er hat sich aber definitiv gelohnt, denn sowohl das Essen als auch die Aussicht waren einfach perfekt.
After strolling through the village afterwards, we hiked to another viewpoint. Also an exhausting way up there, but more than worth it. The path is part of the hiking route to Monterosso, so it’s best to follow the signs towards Monterosso. From up there you have a beautiful view of the harbor & the surrounding colorful houses, the perfect photo spot.
Nachdem wir danach durch das Dorf geschlendert sind, sind wir noch zu einem anderen Aussichtspunkt gewandert. Ebenfalls ein etwas anstrengenderer Weg dort hinauf, der sich aber mehr als lohnt. Der Weg ist Teil der Wanderroute nach Monterosso, folgt also am Besten den Schildern Richtung Monterosso. Von dort oben hat man einen wunderschönen Blick auf den Hafen & die umliegenden bunten Häuser, der perfekte Fotospot.
Corniglia
We skipped this village. Corniglia is the only one of the 5 villages that is not on the sea.
Dieses Dorf haben wir ausgelassen. Corniglia ist das einzige der 5 Dörfer, das nicht am Meer liegt.
General Tips
I highly recommend visiting the Cinque Terre, as it is such a beautiful area! For a rough overview, 2 days there were enough for us. I recommend to just walk through the villages and enjoy the views and especially the good food. Don’t stress yourself, because the villages are tiny and usually a few hours per village are enough. For sports enthusiasts who want to take the trails between the villages, 2 days will be too short though.
We also liked La Spezia very much and I recommend booking a hotel there. Since the offer of accommodations in the villages is not big the few left are accordingly expensive. In La Spezia they are a lot cheaper. The train rides were always smooth, on time and you are in a few minutes in the next village. With a car or a rental car, the villages would not be an option, as I said, because there are no cars/roads in the villages and you would have to park pretty far outside and hike down.
Ich kann euch einen Besuch der Cinque Terre wirklich nur ans Herz legen, es ist einfach so eine wunderschöne Gegend! Für einen groben Überblick haben uns 2 Tage dort gereicht. Ich würde euch empfehlen, einfach durch die Dörfer zu spazieren und die Ausblicke und vor allem das gute Essen zu genießen. Macht euch keinen Stress, denn meistens reichen ein paar Stunden pro Dorf locker aus. Für Sportbegeisterte, die die Wanderwege zwischen den Dörfern nehmen wollen, werden 2 Tage allerdings zu kurz sein.
Auch La Spezia hat uns sehr gut gefallen und ich würde euch auch ein Hotel dort empfehlen. Da das Angebot an Unterkünften in den Dörfern nicht groß ist, sind diese dementsprechend teuer. In La Spezia sind sie um einiges preiswerter. Die Zugfahrten waren immer problemlos, pünktlich und man ist in wenigen Minuten im nächsten Dorf. Mit dem Auto oder einem Mietauto wären die Dörfer wie gesagt keine Option, da es in den Dörfern keine Autos/Straßen gibt und man ziemlich weit außerhalb parken und hinunter wandern müsste.
Costs
We paid 85€ for the flight from Vienna to Pisa (including hand luggage).
For one night in Pisa we paid 62€ for a double room, which makes 31€ per person (Here you can find our B&B).
For the train ride from Pisa to La Spezia we paid 8€ per person.
For 2 nights in La Spezia we paid 120€ for a double room, that makes 60€ per person (Here you can find our B&B).
The Cinque Terre card for 2 days was 33€ per person, unlimited rides.
That makes a total of 217€ per person for 4 days.
In general this region in Italy, also the restaurants, is convenient compared to other Italian destinations. By the way, the pesto originally comes from there, so be sure to try dishes with pesto!
In total we paid 300€ for the extended weekend per person, including the food and expenses there and we have really had a loooot of food 🙂

Generell ist die Region, auch was Restaurants betrifft, meiner Meinung nach günstig. Übrigens kommt das Pesto ursprünglich von dort, probiert also unbedingt Gerichte mit Pesto!
Insgesamt haben wir für das verlängerte Wochenende 300€ pro Person bezahlt, inklusive der Verpflegung dann vor Ort, und wir haben wirklich viiiiiiel gegessen! : )
