Monaco – best things to do & see

Monaco, a small city-state with Italian flair on the French Riviera, where luxury & glamour can be found, is definitely worth a visit. I have been there a total of 4 times now and fell in love with this place since the first time. The beautiful views on the sea in connection with the partly beautiful French houses but also the modern skyscrapers, the yachts and the well-kept city in general, has really done it to me. And although Monaco is considered a very expensive place, I think it’s not even that expensive for a vacation, compared to the other places on the Riviera.

You can easily reach Monaco by train from Nice and other cities on the Côte d’Azur. The train station is not far from the sights and the city center and trains run regularly.

If you want to stay directly in Monaco, it can be very expensive, so I would recommend to look for an accommodation in Beausoleil. Beausoleil is a city located in France, directly above Monaco. So you pass the border, but you don’t even notice it. If you book a rental car in France, for example at the airport in Nice, it is also better to park there, because most of them charge a surcharge if you want to drive to another country (in this case Monaco). There are also plenty of parking spaces and parking garages there.

Monaco, der kleine Stadtstaat mit italienischem Flair an der Côte d’Azur, wo Luxus & Glamour zu finden sind, ist definitiv einen Besuch wert. Ich war nun schon insgesamt 4 Mal dort und habe mich schon beim ersten Mal so sehr in diesen Ort verliebt. Die wunderschönen Ausblicke die man von überall aufs Meer hat in Verbindung mit den teilweise wunderschönen französischen Häusern aber auch den modernen Hochhäusern, den Yachten und der gepflegten Stadt generell, hat es mir richtig angetan. Und obwohl Monaco als ein sehr teures Pflaster gilt, finde ich es verglichen mit den anderen Orten an der Côte d’Azur für einen Urlaub gar nicht mal so teuer.

Man kann Monaco ganz einfach mit dem Zug von Nizza und anderen Städten an der Côte d’Azur aus erreichen. Der Bahnhof ist unweit von den Sehenswürdigkeiten und dem Stadtzentrum entfernt und die Züge fahren regelmäßig.

Wenn man direkt in Monaco übernachten möchte, kann das schon sehr teuer werden, daher würde ich euch empfehlen, eine Unterkunft in Beausoleil zu suchen. Beausoleil liegt in Frankreich, direkt oberhalb von Monaco. Man passiert also die Grenze, was man aber nicht mal mitbekommt. Wenn ihr euch ein Mietauto in Frankreich, zum Beispiel am Flughafen in Nizza bucht, ist es auch besser dort zu parken, da die meisten einen Aufschlag verlangen, wenn man in ein anderes Land (in dem Fall Monaco) fahren möchte. Parkplätze und Parkhäuser gibt es dort auch genug.

Casino de Monte-Carlo

If you visit Monte-Carlo of course a stop at the famous casino can not be missed. On the square in front of the casino you can watch the expensive cars. Right next to it there is the Café de Paris and the Hôtel de Paris, where you can enjoy the atmosphere. You can also visit the casino from the inside without gambling or paying admission. The elaborate decorations and the beautiful building is definitely worth a visit. By the way, Monte-Carlo is one of the nine districts of Monaco, the others are Larvotto, la Rousse, Ravin de Sainte-Devote, les Moneghetti, la Condamine, Monaco-Ville, Jardin Exotique & Fontvieille.

Bei einem Besuch in Monte-Carlo darf natürlich ein Besuch beim berühmten Casino nicht fehlen. Auf dem Platz vor dem Casino kann man die teuren Autos beobachten. Gleich daneben gibt es das Café de Paris und das Hôtel de Paris, um das Treiben in Ruhe auf sich wirken zu lassen. Ihr könnt das Casino übrigens auch von innen besichtigen ohne zu spielen oder Eintritt zu zahlen. Die aufwändigen Dekorationen und das wunderschöne Gebäude ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert. Übrigens ist Monte-Carlo einer der neun Stadtbezirke von Monaco, die anderen sind Larvotto, la Rousse, Ravin de Sainte-Devote, les Moneghetti, la Condamine, Monaco-Ville, Jardin Exotique & Fontvieille.

Port Hercule

A walk along the harbor is definitely a must! The scenery, with the many impressive yachts is simply unbeatable. There are also a lot of restaurants around the harbor to enjoy the view.

Ein Spaziergang am Hafen ist auf jeden Fall ein Muss! Die Kulisse, mit den vielen beeindruckenden Yachten ist einfach unschlagbar. Es gibt auch eine Menge Lokale rund um den Hafen, um den Ausblick zu genießen.

Plage Larvotto

One of my favorite places in Monaco is the beach “Plage Larvotto”. Although this beach has been artificially created, it is still beautiful. On the promenade there are many good restaurants. Tip: In the evening there are also a lot of parties there. 🙂

Einer meiner Lieblingsorte in Monaco ist der Strand “Plage Larvotto”. Der Strand ist zwar künstlich angelegt worden, aber dennoch wunderschön. An der Promenade gibt es viele gute Restaurants. Tipp: Und am Abend gibt es dort auch einige Partys. 🙂

Old town/Le Rocher

The old town of Monaco is located on a rock called “Le Rocher”. There you will find the Prince’s Palace, the Oceanographic Museum and the Cathedral Notre-Dame-Immaculée, where you can visit the tomb of Grace Kelly. The old town is usually visited by every tourist and therefore crowded. However, it’s definitely worth a visit, especially the views of the two ports are stunning from up there.

Die Altstadt von Monaco liegt auf einem Felsen, “Le Rocher” genannt. Dort findet man den Fürstenpalast, das Ozeanografische Museum und die Kathedrale Notre-Dame-Immaculée, in der man das Grab von Grace Kelly besichtigen kann. Die Altstadt ist meist sehr gut besucht und es kann daher schon mal eng werden. Dennoch auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert, denn vor allem die Ausblicke auf die beiden Häfen, sind von dort oben wunderschön.

Tête de Chien

Still a hidden gem but one of the most beautiful places for me! Tête de Chien is the mountain above Monaco. From there you have an incredibly beautiful view of the entire coast and the city-state. You can either hike up from Monaco, or (like we did) drive to the last parking lot and walk the rest of the way to the viewpoint. Be sure to visit it at sunrise or sunset, though. We were there at sunset almost alone and really enjoyed it.

Der Tête de Chien gilt teilweise noch als Geheimtipp, ist aber einer der schönsten Orte für mich! Es handelt sich um den Berg, oberhalb von Monaco. Von dort aus hat man einen unfassbar schönen Blick auf die gesamte Küste und den Stadtstaat. Ihr könnt entweder von Monaco aus hinauf wandern, oder (so wie wir) zum letzten Parkplatz fahren und die restliche Strecke bis zum Aussichtspunkt gehen. Besucht ihn aber unbedingt zum Sonnenaufgang oder Sonnenuntergang. Wir waren zum Sonnenuntergang dort, fast alleine, und haben es wirklich sehr genossen.

The Maybourne Riviera

Another breathtaking view of Monaco can be found from the village of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin or the hotel the Maybourne Riviera. The hotel is located high up on a hill and offers a beautiful view of Monaco and the coast. You can also go there to have a drink or a meal on the terrace and enjoy the view and the excellent ambience. Or you can even stay there if it is in your budget.

Einen anderen atemberaubenden Ausblick auf Monaco hat man von dem Ort Roquebrune-Cap-Martin oder dem Hotel the Maybourne Riviera. Das Hotel liegt hoch oben auf einem Hügel und bietet einen wunderschönen Blick auf Monaco sowie die Küste. Ihr könnt dort auch hinfahren um etwas auf der Terrasse zu trinken oder zu essen und den Ausblick und das hervorragende Ambiente zu genießen. Oder ihr übernachtet dort, wenn es in eurem Budget liegt.

Track of the Monaco Grand-Prix

If you are a Formula 1 fan like me, it will definitely not be boring there 🙂 You can walk the entire track where the race is held every year at the end of May, starting from the Hairpin turn at the Fairmont Hotel, to the Casino, the Tunnel, the Harbor, the Start/Finish line, and so on. If you are there from May to June, you might even be able to attend a race. I’ve been there twice now for Formula E and can highly recommend to experience it! Even for non-motorsport enthusiasts it is worth an experience. 🙂

Für Formel 1 Fans wie mich, wird es dort bestimmt nicht langweilig 🙂 Ihr könnt die gesamte Strecke abgehen, die jedes Jahr Ende Mai dort gefahren wird, angefangen von der Haarnadel Kurve beim Fairmont Hotel, bis zum Casino, dem Tunnel, dem Hafen, der Start-/Ziellinie usw. Wenn ihr von Mai bis Juni dort seid, könnt ihr ja vielleicht sogar ein Rennen besuchen. Ich war nun bereits zweimal bei der Formel-E dort und kann es euch absolut empfehlen! Auch für nicht Motorsport-Begeisterte ist es eine Erfahrung wert. 🙂

Cars collection of the Prince of Monaco

Speaking of cars: there is a museum, the private cars collection of Prince Albert, which I can highly recommend. There you can see a lot of old-timers as well as Formula one cars. The entry fee is 10€ and can also combined with other museums, like the Oceanographic.

Wenn wir schon beim Thema Autos sind: es gibt am Hafen ein Museum, die private Autosammlung von Prince Albert, die ich euch empfehlen kann. Dort sieht man viele Oldtimer sowie Formel 1 Autos. Der Eintritt kostet 10€ und kann auch in einem Kombiticket mit anderen Museen, z.B. dem Ozeanografischen Museum gekauft werden.

Food

If you want to eat cheap and especially very good, I can highly recommend the market hall at Place d’Armes! We were there a few times in the 10 days we spent there and have tried different restaurants and they were all really really good. Especially the truffle bistro I can highly recommend!

Wenn ihr günstig und vor allem sehr gut essen gehen wollt, kann ich euch die Markthalle am Place d’Armes sehr empfehlen! Wir waren in den 10 Tagen, die wir dort verbracht haben, einige Male dort und haben verschiedene Stände ausprobiert und alle waren wirklich sensationell gut. Vor allem das Truffle Bistro kann ich absolut empfehlen!

Cap d’Ail & Plage Mala

Monaco and the next village Cap d’Ail are connected by a beautiful path along the coast that ends at Plage Mala. The “Sentier de Cap d’Ail” is about 5 kilometers long and a walk to the beach takes about 2.5 hours. Many locals like to use the trail for running and exercising, and it’s certainly fun with these views.

Monaco und den Nebenort Cap d’Ail verbindet ein wunderschöner Weg entlang der Küste, der beim Plage Mala endet. Der “Sentier de Cap d’Ail” ist etwa 5 Kilometer lang und ein Spaziergang bis zum Strand dauert etwa 2,5 Stunden. Viele Einheimische benutzen die Strecke gerne zum Laufen und Trainieren, und das macht bei den Aussichten auch bestimmt Spaß.

General Tips

Be careful with your network provider! Monaco is not in the EU, so using the Monegasque network can quickly become very expensive. It is best to choose a French network provider that you can use in Monaco or use the local Wi-Fi, which is available everywhere in the city.

Be prepared that there are a lot of steps in Monaco! Partially there are escalators and elevators that save you the many steps, but you will still have to walk a lot of steps.

Passt auf bei eurem Netzanbieter! Monaco liegt nicht in der EU, daher kann das Benutzen im monegassischen Netz sehr schnell sehr teuer werden. Sucht euch am Besten einen französischen Netzanbieter aus, den ihr in Monaco nutzen könnt oder verwendet das örtliche WLAN, das überall in der Stadt verfügbar ist.

Seid darauf vorbereitet, dass es sehr sehr viele Stufen in Monaco gibt! Teilweise gibt es auch Rolltreppen und Aufzüge, die euch die vielen Stufen ersparen, allerdings werdet ihr trotzdem sehr viele Stufen gehen müssen.
